Experts have written plenty of books to help would-be parents, new parents, and struggling parents.

Work in a library for most of your adult life, and the term due date suggests separation, loss, and consequences. “We know you love the book you borrowed from us. Bring it back now, though, or pay up!”

Over the past several months, however, due date has come to mean something else for my wife and me: new life, anticipation, joy, love, and yes, apprehension and fear. We’re expecting our first child…this month! Life will never be the same. Do we know what we’re doing? Of course we don’t! The good news is that millions of parents, doctors and midwives do know what they’re doing, and have written plenty of books to help would-be parents, new parents, and struggling parents. Does your library have these books? Of course we do! Here is just a tiny sample of some of our more recent selections.

Fertility & conception

Sometimes people get lucky. And sometimes those people are cold-blooded killers. Like the killer who left a body in Kyle Mercer’s backyard swimming pool. Was it the stranger who kept watching her from the woods behind her house? Or was it her husband, a surgeon who worked long hours, covering up an affair gone wrong? When the remains are discovered, everyone looks to Kyle for answers about the woman’s identity. An attorney and a policeman both come to her aid, yet only one wants to uncover the truth. She must choose which one to trust, but if she chooses wrong, she may be the next victim. Help comes from an unlikely source—two young, petty criminals unwittingly trip up the clever murderer. But can they figure out his identity in time to save Kyle?

Join us on May 19th at the West Branch for a special book signing of the new novel, “Pool”, by Robin Beaudette.

Manchester City Library (MCL) has recently expanded its collection of e-books by joining the Overdrive Advantage Program (OAP). OAP allows MCL to purchase additional copies of popular e-books for the exclusive use of MCL patrons. This will have the effect of vastly reducing wait times for e-books that have holds on them.

Patrons will access the new titles through the downloadable books website, http://nh.lib.overdrive.com, and still have access to the entire downloadable books consortium collection. All of the circulation parameters are the same (i.e. two week check out, no renewals, no fines, and early returns are available).

When deciding what to purchase first, MCL has made books with long hold lists a top priority. Here is a slide show on how to place a hold on an ebook and identify books the library has purchased.

Placing a hold on manchester city library ebooks

Learn to locate your family's genealogy at our Genealogy Database Class.

Manchester City Library has several on-line subscription databases available to Manchester City Library card holders. To find out more about these databases, go to the catalog and click on the tab “E-Sources”.

Two of these databases, Ancestry (library edition) and HeritageQuest are very useful in the search of your family history. On May 8th (Tuesday) from 2:30 to 4:00 PM, in the Winchell Room at the Main Library, there will be a class to introduce you to the basic workings of these two databases. In addition, some public on-line genealogy databases will be discussed.

Laptops will be provided during the class to use in the search of the databases. There is a limited amount of available seats; thus you must register ahead of time for the class. You may sign up for the class, using the events calendar at www.manchester.lib.nh.us or call 624-6550 ext. 320.

Point of contact is Eileen A. Reddy for additional information. She can be reached at ereddy@manchesternh.gov or at 624-6550 ext. 320 (Information Desk).
