Movies and Games on the Big Screen at West!

Thanks to the generosity of the Manchester Library Foundation, the West Branch Community Library has installed a new large screen/projector system that’s almost like a movie theater. Every Friday at 3:00 the West Branch Library shows a great movie –one that has recently been released on DVD or one that is a timeless classic. Right now we’re celebrating the new Indiana Jones movie with an Indiana Jones marathon. Movies and other events at West are all online or contact us via email of phone 624-6560. The West Manchester Community Library is located at 76 North Main St., Manchester.

200 of 365 Library Days

When I started my job here I was most excited to bring the Library and its vibrant atmosphere online. One of the first ways I endeavored to do so was participating in the 365 Library Days Project.

Flickr is one of the premier online sites for sharing photos; it boasts a large (some say 1.5 million users) and vibrant online community. There are Flickr Groups for any interest, many of them are geographically related - there’s even a special one for Manchester! The 365 Library Days Group is just over 400 worldwide libraries, each having made the commitment to upload one photo for every day of the year. We began participating on our in-library New Year’s Day celebration and have kept it up ever since. Today we uploaded our 200th photo!

The project, within the library, is a collaboration between me and Yvonne, one of our skilled reference librarians (she blog too!). Yvonne has done a phenomenal job taking lovely photos - really capturing the beauty and spirit of the library. You’ll notice a photo banner at the top of our library webpage created with the latest five of out 365 Libs contributions. Now that we’re over halfway to our goal of one for every day of the year…. What shall we do next year to top it?

This week I’d like to mention a wonderful reference source of information on all things musical: “The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians“. If you are searching for information on music, songs, composers, and musical styles you would do well to use this resource. “The Grove“, as we call it, is twenty-seven volumes of musical bliss. From Beethoven to jazz musicians to zithers–you can find it here. “The Grove” is just one of the many wonderful music reference books available to you here at the library. So if you have a burning question relating to music please come in, e-mail us or call and we’d be glad to help you.

Changes are coming

Coming in August we will be getting a new system to help us keep track of books, movies, cds, more as well as manage library cards and accounts. This will be a huge change for us and there are a few things you should know:

1. We are turning off our old system on August 21st. After date you will still be able to find books on our website, but you will not have access to your account - renewals or placing requests - until we’re fully functional on the new system around August 27th. Other than that you probably won’t notice much, but please do be patient with us as we learn the new system.
2. Around August 27th, you will see a brand new look for the library catalog - things will be different, but don’t panic, we have worked hard to make sure you can still do everything you can do now. There just might be a learning curve.
3. If you have library materials saved in the My List area of your account, please save them or email them to yourself. They cannot be transferred to the new system and will be lost.

We are very excited about this change - we expect it will improve many of the services we provide. Most of all, searching for library materials should get much easier! If you have any questions, as always, please contact us.

Health care topics

Do you need U.S. statistics on a WIDE variety of health care topics for a research paper? Well, look no more!
Health, United States, 2007 is an annual report on trends in health statistics.
This updated source from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services is located in the Government Documents section of the library. This area is off limits to the public, but please ask someone at the Information Desk to help you with any Government Document.

Health, United States, 2007 has various topics in table and chart form on information like:

Health care expenditures, access to healthcare, risk factors, and overall health of the nation by income level
Substance use by age
Weekly restaurant visits by age
Fertility, mortality, disease data

It’s a ‘G’Day for Reading’

This year’s Summer Reading Program is called “G’Day for Reading” begins on Monday, June 30. It will run for six weeks, and finish up on Friday, August 8th. It is for children in grades K-5, but we encourage those younger to sign up as well.

Once they sign up at the library, they have to read 10 books during those six weeks. They can read more if they want. Out of those 10 books, they have to tell about 4 of them to one of our volunteers during sharing time. Sharing Times are M-Tu-Thurs from 9:30-7:30 and Wed & Fri from 9:30-4:30. After each sharing, they will get a prize. After reading the 10 books, they will earn a free book and an invite to the finale program on Thursday, August 14.

There are other programs going on as well.

Every Tuesday, beginning July 1, there will be storytime at 9:30 in the Winchell Room.

Every Thursday, beginning July 3, there will be a craft time at 9:30 in the Winchell Room. This program you do have to sign up for due to limited space.

Friday mornings at 9:30 am, I do a lapsit storytime for babies and their caregivers. The ages for that is newborns up to 23 months.

Wednesdays July 16, 23, & 30, at 10:00 am, Karina will be here to present a music program for all ages. She was here last year and the kids just loved her.

Tuesday, July 8, Musician Paul Warnick is here at 2:00 pm in the Library’s side yard. He will be presenting a musicial program about Australia.

Tuesday, July 15, the Marine Docents are here at 2:00 pm to present a program on sea life. This program you do have to sign up for due to limited space.

Monday, July 14, there is a Dance Dance Revolution program happening at 3:00 pm in the Winchell Room. This program is for grades K-5 and there is a sign up.

There will be a movie on Monday, August 4 at 2:00 pm. Not sure on the title yet.

Life Size Clue will be on Wednesday, August 13, at 2:30 pm. This program is for grades K-5 and there is a sign up.

Automotive repair

Are you trying to work on a vehicle and need information to keep it running? Check out the automotive repair resources available to you at our library. We have many, many volumes of Mitchell and Chilton repair guides in our reference collection as well as through our on-line database. The Auto Repair Reference Center is available here, on the library’s website. Easy to use, this site will ask you the year of your car and give you choices of carmakers and their brands / models. Depending on year and model, you can find information about repair procedures, service bulletins & recalls, diagrams of various car systems, troubleshooting and other tips about cars. Information is available on vehicles built from 1945 to the present. Lastly, if you don’t find what you need to repair your car, please call or e-mail us at the reference desk. We’re always glad to help.

New Fine Structure

Beginning July 1, 2008, the library is changing the overdue fees for some of our items. The new fees will be:

$0.25 a day ($5 max) on books, CDs, cassettes, and periodicals
$1.00 a day ($10 max) on framed prints.

All other fines will remain the same.

NH Traveling Pants Reunion Tour

Are you a fan of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants? If so, come help us celebrate the release of a second movie based upon the series! We will view and decorate some traveling pants that are back for a “reunion” while enjoying snacks and a movie based upon the first book.
