Sci-Fi/Fantasy Recommendations for April

April 14th, 2024 · Book Recommendations, Books, City Library, Library Displays, Main Branch, Teens, West Branch

There’s something so enticing about a profession where people are the absolute best at what they do. The best assassins are not just deadly weapons, but also masters of disguise, improvisation, and slight-of-hand. Their world is brutal and beautiful, and only the very best survive. Their stories are rich, tragic, and compelling, as are the moral choices they face during every job.

Take a look at this month’s Fantasy book recommendations for stories about these versatile ki**ers for hire!

National Pet Day: April 11

April 11th, 2024 · Books, Main Branch

Did you know that today is National Pet Day? A recent survey conducted by PetMD (Chewy), The 8 Most Popular Pets in 2023, found that most Americans–not surprisingly–favor dogs and cats, with dogs edging out cats 65.1% to 46.5%. A distant third place goes to freshwater fish, coming in at 11.1%. What about you? Are you more of a dog person or a cat person? Or something else? Myself, I love dogs. I thought it would be fun to create a Periodic Table of Dogs and Cats, following the same idea as the Periodic Table of Elements in chemistry. Like the original table there are rows and columns, with categories like popular names, smartest breeds, fictional dogs and cats from children’s books, comics/cartoons and Disney, National Dog Show Groups and different breeds. Come check out our National Pet Day display at the library, and see if your dog or cat breed is the smartest or has a popular name. Did your favorite fictionalized furry friend make it on the table, come find out? We hope to see you soon.

April 8th, 2024 · Books, Children, City Library, Events, Library Displays, Main Branch, National Library Week, News, Teens

The Manchester City Library encourages everyone in the community to visit the library to take part in all the library has to offer.

Libraries give us a green light to experience something truly special: a place to connect with others, learn new skills, and pursue our passions through book clubs, children’s story times, teen movie nights, adult DIY crafts, music events and more. Your library offers a wide array physical and electronic materials, educational programs, and research resources for adults and children at two locations.

Libraries play a pivotal role in economic development by providing resources and support for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. Your library supports Manchester with services such as toddler story times, computer classes, tutoring, teen activities, writer’s clubs and much more.  See our calendar for a full list of library activities.

No matter where you find yourself on the roadmap through life’s journey—preparing for a new career, launching a business, raising a family, or settling into retirement the library offers the resources and support you need and an inclusive and supportive community where you will feel welcome.

So, get ready to explore, become inspired, and connect with others this National Library Week. Your library is there for you, all the way to the finish line.
