Celebrate Children’s Book Week

May 11th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Books, Children, News

Children’s Book Week, which began in 1919, takes place from May 11-17 this year, and is sponsored by the Children’s Book Council.  Last year we celebrated with photos of our librarians holding some of our favorite picture books.  This year, we’d like to extend the celebration to our patrons.  You can participate by doing one or both of the following:

  1. Post a comment below telling us the name of a favorite book from your childhood, or one you’ve enjoyed sharing with your children.
  2. Post a review of the book in our online catalog.  It’s easy!  After you find the title in the catalog (assuming it’s available at a GMILCS library) click on the “Write a review” link in the column on the left.  (If it’s your first time posting a review, you have to fill out a quick registration.)

The length and content of your posts/reviews are completely up to you, and absolutely anyone can post, so we hope you’ll join us for the conversation.

After much thought, I’ve come to the conclusion that Blueberries for Sal is my all-time favorite picture book. It’s probably not a coincidence that I lived in Maine from birth to age 10. We had raspberries, though. I never heard any kuplinking or kuplanking. Even if I used a metal pail instead of a plastic tumbler, I think raspberries would just sound like a thud, which is onomatopoetically lame…but they were all routed directly to my mouth. My dad would return to the house with a full cup, and mine would be empty.
I have an annotated list of my other (nine) favorite picture books on my personal blog.
Find Blueberries for Sal in the library catalog.
