We will be discussing the book Molokai by Alan Brennert.  This is a heart-wrenching novel  set in Hawaii in the 1890’s in which  a young girl contracts leprosy and is forcibly removed from her family home to live in a leper colony.  Set in Hawaii more than a century ago and based on historical fact, Rachel Kalama is seventeen years old when a rose-colored mark appeared on her skin.  A diagnosis of Leprosy causes her to be taken from her family and sent to the leprosy settlement on the island of Molokai.  Here her life is supposed to end, but she discovers it is just beginning.  For questions, contact the Information Department at 624-6550 ext. 320. Copies of the book are currently available at the Manchester City Library Circulation Desk if you’d like to read this book and join us. Our discussion will be at lunchtime (12:15 PM) on Tuesday, December 30th in the Hunt room.  So bring your lunch and dream of tropical Hawaii.

See you at the book discussion!
