3 reasons to be happy this November:
- It’s Movember, or No-Shave November! This month-long event started in Australia as a fund-raising and awareness initiative for Cancer research. It began in 1999 and has gained popularity and traction outside Australia since, spreading to South Africa, Europe, and eventually North America in 2006. The rules are simple: during the month of November, forego shaving to grow a beard or cultivate a mustache. Participants can register with different foundations and have friends and family sponsor you, or you can support others in their hairy endeavors. Check out the library’s No-Shave November book list for some great reads!
- World Kindness Day was November 13th! Introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, it’s observed in many countries across the world, including Canada, Japan, Nigeria, UAE, Singapore, Italy, India, Australia, the UK, and more. WKD is a global, 24-hour celebration dedicated to paying-it-forward and focusing on the good. You can get involved without spending anything, just do something kind! You can share a kindness quote, write someone a letter of thanks, pick up some trash you see on the street, volunteer, or recycle. Have some dough to spend? Send someone flowers, donate to a charity, or buy a stranger’s coffee. Want more ideas? Visit some websites dedicated to spreading kindness! But why stop on the 13th? Practice kindness all year!
- Thanksgiving falls on November 24th this year. It’s a traditional day to spend time with family, celebrating everything we are thankful for and marks the beginning of the broader holiday season. If you love Thanksgiving, you can revel in traditional foods and thematically relevant stories with the library’s Thanksgiving list. If you dread Thanksgiving, try doing something different like volunteering around the community, and take care of yourself and your mental wellness. Otherwise, well, I hear Netflix has some really great stuff this November.
