October is “Global Diversity Awareness Month” & “National I’m-Just-Me-Because Month”

October 10th, 2017 · No Comments · Books, Children, City Library, Main Branch, Teens, Trustees, West Branch

Recently, there has been increased discussion about differences in society: different ethnicities, genders, political viewpoints, socioeconomic backgrounds, education, etc.  We are individually and collectively a by-product of previous generations, life experiences, and our environments.

What makes you unique?  Are you tall?  Do you have a bubbly personality?  Where did your ancestors live 200 years ago?  How come you’re so funny? Where did you learn to write like that?  How has your past influenced your present?  The answers to all these questions form our identities.  Each of us is unique with our own personality, quirks, appearance, and talents.  So in honor of “Global Diversity Awareness” month, and “National I’m-Just-Me-Because” month, let’s celebrate what makes each of you unique from everyone else.

Diversity, identity, roots, and individuality are such broad topics, and mandate a deep examination of oneself and others when exploring them.  This process requires an openness to discussion, and entails not only sharing our own thoughts, but listening to others as well.  Let’s learn more about one another so we can celebrate & appreciate our differences, instead of using them to divide us.  We want to invite you to the library this month to discover the books we have on display about these complex subjects – we’re all bound to learn something new.
