O Captain, My Captain!

April 19th, 2011 · No Comments · Books, City Library, Main Branch, NH Room, Teens, West Branch

Does anyone remember watching the movie, The Dead Poets Society?  When all the young men in poetry class scrambled up onto their school desks and shouted, “O Captain, My Captain“?  I had to run right out and find a copy of that poem by American poet Walt Whitman, to see what all the fuss was about.  I also secretly wished that my poetry classes had been so exciting.

New Hampshire has a long and proud poetic tradition.  Did you know that several United States Poet Laureates hail from New Hampshire?  Robert Frost, Donald Hall, Charles Simic, and Maxine Kumin all called New Hampshire their home.

April is designated as National Poetry Month by the Academy of American Poets.  Celebrate the beauty of language and emotion by reading the poetry of your favorite poet, or perhaps by reading poetry that is new to you.  This month we will be “tweeting” lines from some famous poems and poets–sharing some of our favorites with you in hopes that you will enjoy them as much as we do.  Do you have a favorite poem or a favorite poet?  Drop a line and let us know!  Happy poetry month, and see you at the library!
