Banned Books Week

September 30th, 2011 · 2 Comments · Books, Children, City Library, Main Branch, Teens, West Branch

You might have noticed something different going on this week on our website because this week is banned books week. All this week we have been tweeting the titles of a few books or magazines that have been challenged or banned because of content or because someone thought the book “was scary.” As the old saying goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Celebrate your First Amendment rights by reading a banned book–or by just reading whatever you want, knowing that it was by your own choice!

Thank you for writing about this. Our country’s best literature makes us think or feel strongly, In that way it is always offensive to some people. That is all the more reason to keep our freedoms to write and to be read.

    Dear Michael,
Well said, well said! Good literature should make us feel, react and think. I am reminded of the logo from last year’s Banned Book Week: “Think for yourself and let others do the same.”
    Thank you!
    Cordially,
    ~Yvonne Loomis~
