19th Century newpaper collection preserved

February 13th, 2009 · No Comments · City Library, News, NH Room

We have completed the microfilming of our 19th Century historical newspaper collection previously housed in the non-climate controlled library stacks. The bound newspapers were brittle and in need of preservation before they were damaged beyond repair.

To fund this project, The Manchester City Library Foundation, the non-profit fundraising board of the Library, received a grant from the Cogswell Benevolent Trust. The Trust was created according to the will of shoe factory magnate Leander Cogswell of Henniker to continue his community support for future generations.

The newspapers contain valuable historical and genealogical information about Manchester and New Hampshire. Some of the many titles included on the films from 1877 through 1890 are the Weekly Union, Union Democrat and N. H. Agriculturist, and the N. H. Catholic from 1886-1892.

The microfilm will be housed in the New Hampshire Room, the library’s local history collection. For more information about the newspaper collection and for special hours of the room, call the library at 624-6550 x306, email Cindy O’Neil at [email protected] or check the library’s website.
