Reading eBooks on your Smart Phone

Did you know that you can read books on your smart phone?  In just a few easy steps you can download the Kindle App to your phone and download eBooks from the library for free!

 Here’s how it’s done.

Downloading the App
1. Go to the App Store on your phone
2. Search for the Kindle App
3. Download/ Install the Kindle App (it’s free!)
4. Register using your account login information
• If you don’t have an account, registering for one doesn’t take long; it just takes a few minutes to fill out the registration with your name, address and billing information (Note:  if you download eBooks from the library, there won’t be any charges, this billing info is just if you buy something from Amazon)

Searching for and Downloading an EBook
1. From your phone or from your computer, go to the Manchester City Library’s website (
2. Go to the drop-down bar at the left side that says How do I “download a book” and press Go
3. Click on the link “Search for Downloadable Books Here”
4. The New Hampshire Downloadable Books page will come up
5. Sign in using your Library Name (Manchester:  Manchester City Library) and your library card number, which is located on the back of your card
6. From this website you can search for Kindle eBooks
7. Once you find a eBook that is available in Kindle format, click on “Available – Add to Cart”
• If the eBook you are looking for is checked out you can put it on hold
• You will be emailed when the eBook is available for you to check out, and you will then have 2 days to go to the website and check out the eBook
• You can have up to 5 downloadable eBook holds at one time
8. From My Cart click on “Proceed to Checkout” (Note:  you can take up to 3 eBooks out at one time)
9. Click on “Confirm Check Out”
10. From the Download page click “Get for Kindle”
11. An page will appear with your eBook, click on “Get library book” on the right-hand side of the screen
12. Sign in using your Amazon account
13. If you have multiple devices signed up with Amazon, choose the device you want your eBook to be downloaded to and press “continue”
14. The eBook will be added to your Kindle library, if you have Wi-Fi access your smart phone will update automatically
15. You will have 14 days to read your Kindle eBook (Note: You cannot renew library eBooks, but you can re-checkout the title if it is available)

Returning your EBook Early
1. Sign into your account, click on “Manage your Kindle”
2. Find the eBook in your Kindle Library
3. Press the “Actions” button on the right side of the screen next to the title and choose “return this eBook”
4. Press the “Actions” button again and choose “delete from library” to no longer see the title in your Kindle Library list of eBooks
