To continue providing programs you’d like to see, we’d like to invite you to take part in our very short survey. Your much-needed feedback will be used to continue programs you’ve enjoyed in the past and will help us to bring you the adult programming you want to see at your library in the future. The surveys are currently available online and will be physically available starting National Library Week, April 8th.

You can fill out the survey one of two ways:

1) Online: You can fill out the survey online by going here.

2) Paper Copy: Grab a copy of the survey when you visit the library! Copies will be located at Adult programs here at the library and in the library Rotunda. Completed paper versions of the survey should be returned to the Information Services Desk, located in the Manchester City Library Reading Room.

Answer a few questions and make your library work for you by telling us the kinds of programming you want. Remember, this survey pertains to adult programming only.

Thanks for taking time to fill out our survey and thank you your continued support of Manchester City Library!

Social networking now accounts for 22% of all time spent online in the US.

Social media is a phrase being tossed around a lot these days, but it can sometimes be difficult to answer the question of what is social media. The best way to define social media is to break it down. Media is an instrument on communication, like a newspaper or a radio, so social media would be a social instrument of communication. Think of regular media as a one-way street where you can read a newspaper or listen to a report on television, but you have very limited ability to give your thoughts on the matter. Social media, on the other hand, is a two-way street that gives you the ability to communicate too. Because social media is such a broad term, it covers a large range and type of websites. The one common link between these websites is that you are able to interact with the website and interact with other visitors. Here are some interesting facts about social media:

Social networking now accounts for 22% of all time spent online in the US.

Facebook tops Google for weekly traffic in the U.S.

Social Media has overtaken pornography as the #1 activity on the web.

If Facebook were a country it would be the world’s 3rd largest.

The number of social media users age 65 and older grew 100 percent throughout 2010, so that one in four people in that age group are now part of a social networking site.

On Tuesday, March 20th we will be hosting an introductory class on social media applications. This class will be part hands on/part discussion and is intended for those who are new to social media. The class will run from 2-3 PM in the Winchell Room of the main branch. Registration is required, so please visit our website or call us (at 624-6550 X320) to register.

See you at the library!

Interested in researching your family genealogy? Visit our class and learn some research basics!

Manchester City Library has several on-line subscription databases available to Manchester City Library card holders. To find out more about these databases, go to the on-line library catalog and click on the tab “E-Sources”.

Two of these databases, Ancestry (library edition) and Heritage Quest are very useful in the search of your family history. On March 8th (Tuesday), from 2:00 to 3:30 PM, there will be a class to introduce you to the basic contents and workings of these two databases. During this class, some other public on-line genealogy databases will be talked about.

Laptops will be provided during the class session for use in working with these databases. There is a limited amount of available seats; thus you must register ahead of time for the class. You may register on-line through the library’s calendar of events or by calling the Reference Desk at 624-6550 ext. 320.

Point of contact for this class is Eileen A. Reddy, if you have additional questions. She can be reached at ereddy@manchesternh.gov or 624-6550 ext. 320 (Reference Desk).
