Double Vision

Our Family Fare series in the park has been sponsored by the community and the Library Trustees for the past 18 years. The series is for families to come and enjoy entertainment for 6 weeks during the summer. This year’s programs are sure to please all ages. All programs will be held in Victory Park and in the event of rain will be held in the Library’s Auditorium.

FAMILY FARE 2010

July 8, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
JUDY PANCOAST
New Hampshire’s own Judy Pancoast, well known to Family Fare audiences, will make her New Hampshire debut with her brand new band, The Groovy Dudes, on July 8th. Judy Pancoast and the Groovy Dudes will rock the park with their signature brand of “Bubblegum Pop for Sweet Kids, ” including new Judy tunes and fan favorites such as “A Little Bit of Elvis” and “Swimming in Jello.” Don’t worry about bringing a chair…you won’t want to sit down!

July 15, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
STORYTELLER /SONGWRITER STEVE BLUNT
Songwriter and storyteller, fun for all ages. There will be stories and songs to sing and just plain silliness.

July 22, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
DAN GRADY AND HIS MARVELOUS MARIONETTES
Show is fast-paced, stringed puppet production comprised of routines that have that special something which is sure to tantalize, captivate, enchant and delight all those whom attend. The broad range of acts include tightrope and trapeze artistry as performed by Eadarg Bros., to the country western strumming and crooning of the celebrated superstar Conway Kitty.

July 29, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS – NATURAL SELECTION
Make a Splash! Summer reading program theme. Water animals will include alligator, snake, tree frogs, toad and turtles and many more. The animals have been rescued and captive born / raised non-native (or “exotic”) wildlife, assist us as Ambassadors of Education… spreading the message of conservation, appreciation and respect for all of Earth’s creatures

August 5, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
VIC & STICKS
A musical storytelling show performed with a vaudeville/ragtime flair! Mixed with old fashioned vaudeville theatrics, this show will surely entertain.

August 12, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
DOUBLE VISION
Double Vision (mime, acrobatics, and juggling). The Scalises always knew they wanted more than anything else to be entertainers. Prepare to be amazed as Jody and Linda Scalise showcase their mime, acrobatics, and juggling talents.

On the Run

Missing – One twenty-four inch toilet bowl plunger with a yellow wooden handle and a black rubber suction-cup. The handle was artfully adorned with one inch blue tape spirally down it’s length. Likewise, the handle was hand painted with stick-figure boys and girls along with colorful flowers. The plunger was signed by the artist. It was last seen standing behind the toilet in the Children’s Room bathroom. It may be accompanied by two red, very unattractive plastic lobsters and the brass clock that sat on security’s desk. If found, please return them to it’s rightful owner, no questions asked. They are missed very much.

Honor Our Independence with the 195th Army Band

Before you start your 4th of July weekend, stop by the Manchester City Library and treat yourself to an hour of patriotic music! The 195th Army Band, based in Bangor, Maine, will honor the city with a performance on the library lawn Friday, July 2nd, from noon to 1 p.m. Listen to your favorite marches and brass band selections from one of the finest reserve component bands on the East Coast. In the event of rain, the concert will be held in the library auditorium.

Extreme couponer Karen Haque and her husband Khaled, featured recently in the New Hampshire Sunday News, have used coupons to save thousands of dollars on groceries in the past few years. Find out how you can too! They will hold a free workshop here at the Manchester City Library on Tuesday, June 29 at 7 p.m. Space is limited, demand will be high and registration is required. Make a Splash! Summer Reading Kickoff

Today is the day: the start of the summer reading program! Incidentally, it’s also the longest day of the year (summer solstice). So…who wants to party? Stop by our summer reading kickoff event, today from 4:00 to 6:00 PM in the Winchell Room. Drop in anytime during the two hour event—we’ll have games, crafts, snacks, and music going. It’s also a great time to sign up for the summer reading program, and take home a pile of books to get you started. We hope to see you there!

Teen Summer Reading Program

Area teens are invited to “Make Waves @ Your Library” this summer by participating in the Manchester City Library’s teen summer reading library program from June 21 to August 6. Teens are invited to come to the Library and read for prizes as well as to take part in special events offered throughout the summer. Programs this summer will include bi-monthly Anime Club meetings, a water games party, Guitar Hero tournaments, crafts and more.

Participation is easy, each time you read a book fill out a short form with the book information. These forms double as raffle tickets. Attend one of our teen programs and earn two raffle tickets just for showing up. To learn more visit the library or contact Kate for more information. We’re only promising you a summer of fun!

Make a Splash! Kids’ Summer Reading Program

Are you looking for something free for your children to do this summer? Join us at the Manchester City Library for our annual summer reading program. This year’s theme is Make a Splash, Read! and will run from June 21st and August 6th.

To participate in the program, children are encouraged to read, or have read to them, 10 books. Librarians and volunteers will be available daily to share stories, chart books, and award prizes. Some of this year’s prizes are sponsored by Blake’s, Mel’s Funway, McDonald’s, and Ben and Jerry’s. Registration for the program will begin on June 21st.

We will be offering many weekly programs for different ages during the weeks of the summer reading program:

Mondays: Family matinée at 1:00 PM (movies are listed below)
Tuesdays: Family storytime for all ages at 9:30 AM
Wednesdays: Little Movers storytime for ages 2 to 5 at 10:30 AM
Thursdays: Summer crafts for grades K-5 at 9:30 AM
Fridays: Lap-sit storytime for 23 months and under at 9:30 AM

Many other fun activities, raffles and programs are planned. The program will be kicked off with an indoor family beach party on Monday, June 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, and will end with a summer reading party on Thursday, August 13th at 2:00 PM, where the Majestic Theatre Trust will be performing Go West, a fun, adventure filled production. Whether you’re starting your own business or cleaning out your closet, you can join the more than 1.3 million people who use eBay as a primary or secondary source of income. Our upcoming class, The Basics of Selling on eBay with Bobbi Miller, will give you the tips and tools you need to sell your items to a worldwide market on eBay.

Learn how to:

• become an eBay seller
• do research and create listings
• improve your listings with better descriptions and photography
• set pricing
• open and use a PayPal account
• monitor your listings
• complete transactions

Bobbi Miller, a Portsmouth-based Education Specialist trained by eBay, teaches students in a fun, casual atmosphere. Bobbi has been selling on eBay since 2000 and is founder of the Seacoast eBay Sellers Group. Her business was recently featured on WMUR’s NH Chronicle.

Please bring an item you’d like Bobbi to research as to how it has been selling on eBay. Collectibles and antiques are encouraged. The class will meet Saturday, May 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Bring a lunch or head downtown for a bite to eat during lunch break. Space is limited and registration is required. Celebrate Children’s Book Week

We are celebrating Children’s Book Week with a very special storytime. Treat your mom or grandmother to this special storytime on Tuesday, May 11, beginning at 4:00 pm in the Winchell Room. Listen to A Chair for My Mother by Vera B. Williams read by a special guest. Afterward, design a comfy chair for your mom or grandmother to show them how much you love them. Refreshments will be served afterward. This program is for children preschool up to 3rd grade. Registration is recommended. This program is supported by the TD Charitable Foundation. Collecting Pasta for NH Food Bank

It’s been a year since the library collected pasta for the New Hampshire Food Bank.

And we’re doing it again!

During the month of May, the library will be accepting donations of pasta to support the efforts of the New Hampshire Food Bank. We’ll take boxes of pasta, bags of pasta, canned pasta, whole wheat pasta, gluten-free pasta, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, and any other kind of pasta you can find! You can drop off donations at either the main Library, 405 Pine Street, or the West Manchester Community Library, 76 North Main Street.

In 2009 the New Hampshire Food Bank distributed over 5.8 million pounds of donated, surplus food to over 350 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, day care centers, senior citizen homes and substance abuse treatment centers. These member agencies in turn provide services to the nearly 127,200 hungry men, women and children per year throughout New Hampshire.
