Library to Host Free Financial Aid Program

While financial aid can make college more affordable, parents and students are expected to take primary responsibility for paying for post-secondary education. In this session, we will address options for managing college costs, applying for financial aid, and discuss college funding options. Attendees will receive the Financial Aid Organizer and The Essential Pocket Guide to Scholarships. A representative from Granite State Management & Resources will be available to answer your questions.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

A Year of Wonders

The Thursday evening book group will be discussing “Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague” by Geraldine Brooks. In the year 1666, as an isolated English village quarantines itself to prevent the spread of the plague, a housemaid named Anna Frith and her fellow villagers confront fear, death and superstition. This discussion will be held on January 12th, from 7-8:30 PM in the Winchell Room of the Main Branch. For more information contact Sarah Basbas at 624-6560.

The library will be closed from Saturday, December 24th through Monday, December 26th in observance of the Christmas holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday, December 27th at 2:30 PM because of the planned power outage and repair work by PSNH.

Anime at the West Branch Library

Want to find out about Japanese animation? On Wednesday Dec. 7 at 7:00 PM Jonathan Beaudette, master of all things Anime, will share his knowledge, his Anime collection & other Japanese animation items. All ages welcome.

Anime Art Contest

During Teen Read Week, October 16-22 create something out of this world. Teens in grades 6-12 can compete in the second annual Anime Art contest! Prizes will be awarded including a gift certificate to Barnes and Noble.

Submission Guidelines:

You must include your name and phone number written on the back of the art, so we can return your art to you. All submissions will be displayed in the Teen Area of the Manchester City Library from October 20th through November 17th.

You can submit your artwork by October 20, 2011 two ways:

Drop the artwork off at the Manchester City Library, Circulation Desk, 405 Pine Street.

Bring the artwork with you to MCL’s Anime Club meeting October 20th at 4:00p.m.

Paper and colored pencils will be available during Anime Club meetings for people to draw contest entries.

Art must be either:

A character done in anime style or an established anime character in any style you choose.

Artists can submit original character drawings (a character they make up) but these characters must be drawn in an anime style.

Family Fare August 4th and 11th!

Our Thursday evening Family Fare programs have been moved to the south lawn of the library! Bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on the library lawn and enjoy the performance. This Thursday we have Norman the Magician performing. On August 11th our animal friends from the Granite State Zoo will be returning. The programs still start at 6 pm and we hope to see you here!

Hot Enough to Fry Steak and Eggs!

Lately, the weather forecasters have been saying things like: heat wave, furnace, blowtorch, oven, scorcher, front burner, inferno, and the latest terminology; heat dome! CNN is showing videos of reporters cooking steaks and eggs on their car dashboards. Wow! It’s hot out there!

The Manchester City Library is a designated cooling center, so if you need some “cooling off time”, please come on in and get cool. Bring your laptop, knitting, crossword puzzles or pick up a magazine or book to read in the library. You don’t need a library card to come inside! If you are worried about your pets you can take them to the Animal Hospital in Nashua. The phone number for the animal hospital is (603) 880-3034. They called us to help them get the word out. Here is a listing of other cooling centers throughout the city of Manchester:

Manchester City Library at 405 Pine Street (603) 624-6550. Hour of operation are: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM and Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday from 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM.

In addition, the City of Manchester’s public swimming facilities opened on June 25, 2011. The daily hours of operation are as follows (weather permitting):

Celebrate Winter Break at the Library!

Monday, February 21^st – Story-time in the Gallery – 11:30 am, Currier Art Museum: Join Ms. Karyn and Ms. Michelle as we read a story and discuss a related art work at the museum. For all ages.

Tuesday, February 22^nd – Musician Steve Blunt – 2:00 pm. Auditorium, Main Library: A family program for patrons of all ages featuring mostly humorous original compositions and traditional American & multicultural selections. All ages are welcome. Registration is not required. Limited seating. Call 624-6550 ext. 328.

Tuesday, February 22^nd – Lego Club – 2:00 pm. West Manchester Community Library: Kids of all ages can build vehicles, buildings & anything else they want with LEGOS provided by the Library. Registration is suggested. Call 624-6560

Tuesday, February 22^nd – Travel Club – 4:00 pm, Winchell Room, Main Library: Join us as we travel to Mexico. Learn about the culture and food of Mexico. Wednesday, February 23^rd – Teen Cooking Club – 3:00 pm, Winchell Room, Main Library: Teen Cooking Club is a great way to learn the basics of cooking. Thursday, February 24^th – Critter’n Creatures, 2:00 pm, West Manchester Community Library: This is a hands-on. Live animal show with bearded dragons, alligators, snakes, hedgehogs, turtles and many more animals. This event will take place at the Senior Center next door to the West Manchester Library. Friday, February 25^th – Stuffed Animal Sleepover – 4:00 pm, Winchell Room, Main Library: Have you ever wondered what happens after the library closes for the night? Bring your favorite stuffed animal and leave them overnight with us. We will take pictures of their overnight antics. You can pick them up the next morning at Family Story-time. Grades K to 5.
