West Manchester Friends Book and Bake Sale

The Friends of the West Manchester Library is sponsoring a book sale that will take place at the West Manchester Library from 10:00-1:00. The West Manchester Library is normally closed on Saturday but on May 19th the branch will have special hours from 9:30-2:30. We will also have a performance by the Granite State Clowns from 11:30-1:00 and a Bike Clinic sponsored by Goodale’s Bike Shop 10-1:00 which will offer safety and maintenance tips.

TEEN POETRY SLAM: SLAMMIN’ @ YOUR LIBRARY

Enter the 2012 Teen Poetry Slam hosted by the Manchester City Library, or come to cheer on your favorite slammer. The excitement takes place on Tue, April 24, 6:00 PM, at the library. Contact, Kate for more information or to sign up as a slam competitor. If you simply want to join the fun as an audience member, no need to register to do that—just show up at the Slam!

Poetry Slam Guidelines:

Teens ages 12-18 may enter the competition
Material should be appropriate for ages 12-18
Poems must be original/poet’s own work
Please limit your presentation to five minutes
No props are allowed
You are encouraged to memorize your poem
Be respectful, no talking when others are presenting
Please state your name and the title of your poem before you begin
You may opt to start over or read again later in the evening

American History Online

Do you have a history report due soon? Or maybe you’re just curious about how the U.S. got to be where it is today. If so, try our American History Online database! Browse or search American history for timelines, videos and images, maps, biographies, and even primary sources. Cruise over to the Topic Center to learn more about the eras of the past, like the Roaring ’20s, or the Gilded Age (1870-1900). Or, take a gander at the Editor’s Selection of the Month. Learn about how people reacted when World War I ended, or what made one of television’s longest running early morning children’s shows, Captain Kangaroo, so beloved. This resource will be useful for school projects, or fun just to explore.

West Manchester Anime Club Meets

Jonathan Beaudette, the anime expert who attended our last anime program, will join us to watch anime movies, discuss anime books, share drawings and get ideas for future meetings. He also promises to show us how to legally watch anime online free! Due to the content we have set an age requirement of 12 years old or older for this event. Snacks will be provided. So if you love anime and want to join the Anime Club at the West Branch, please plan to join us on Wednesday, March 7th at 7:00 PM at the West Branch Meeting Room.

Library to Host Free Financial Aid Program

While financial aid can make college more affordable, parents and students are expected to take primary responsibility for paying for post-secondary education. In this session, we will address options for managing college costs, applying for financial aid, and discuss college funding options. Attendees will receive the Financial Aid Organizer and The Essential Pocket Guide to Scholarships. A representative from Granite State Management & Resources will be available to answer your questions.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

A Year of Wonders

The Thursday evening book group will be discussing “Year of Wonders: A Novel of the Plague” by Geraldine Brooks. In the year 1666, as an isolated English village quarantines itself to prevent the spread of the plague, a housemaid named Anna Frith and her fellow villagers confront fear, death and superstition. This discussion will be held on January 12th, from 7-8:30 PM in the Winchell Room of the Main Branch. For more information contact Sarah Basbas at 624-6560.

The library will be closed from Saturday, December 24th through Monday, December 26th in observance of the Christmas holiday. We will reopen on Tuesday, December 27th at 2:30 PM because of the planned power outage and repair work by PSNH.
