What a summer!

You didn’t even have to swim to Make a Splash at the Manchester City Library this summer. Children and teens alike participated in our annual summer reading program. The theme for children, pre-school to fifth grade was Make a Splash-Read! This summer we saw a huge increase in participation with 414 children with over half of them, 217 met their goal. They read a total of 2604 books in all.
At the main library, we kicked off the celebration with a beach party where we ate ice pops and created masterpieces with color sand. Many children attended our weekly theme related storytimes and programs. Thursday morning crafts and Friday’s Make a Splat outside art program were a huge success. On Wednesday mornings, we were treated to music by our budding musicians, ages 2 to 5 years old during the special Little Movers Storytime. Children’s movies on Monday afternoon were well attended and gave our youngest patrons a chance to get out of the heat and see some of their most favorite films. During July, we painted with bubbles of all shapes and sizes. We also had a visit from the Blue Ocean Society who brought tide pool animals to learn about and even touch.
Over on the West side, Magician Debbie O’Carroll kicked off the summer program with an amazing performance. Weekly events such as make/take crafts, movies and storytimes were a huge success. Family Bingo sponsored by our Friends group and a visit from the Blue Ocean Society drew huge crowds that had a blast escaping the summer heat! Children always looked forward to seeing what they could grab from the treasure chest.
The teen summer reading theme was Make Waves @ Your Library. 60 teens participated, who read a total of 125 books. Special events included Anime Club, Guitar Hero tournament, cooking club, tie-dying t-shirts, as well as a water game party.
The Majestic Theatre helped us wrap up the summer festivities by entertaining us with their performance of a western called The Taming of Katie Lou. So with lots of raffles and refreshments, we ended our summer fun. Many thanks are extended to McDonalds, Ben & Jerry’s, Blake’s Ice Cream and Mel’s Funway for their generous support.

Kids Bingo Night at West

Kids can have fun playing bingo at Kids Bingo Night at the West Manchester Community Library on August 4 at 6:30. We’ll be using the great bingo set-up at the Senior Center next door, which must be accessed through the West Manchester Library, 76 N. Main Street. Enjoy prizes and ice cream. This event is sponsored by the Friends of the West Manchester Community Library.

Double Vision

Our Family Fare series in the park has been sponsored by the community and the Library Trustees for the past 18 years. The series is for families to come and enjoy entertainment for 6 weeks during the summer. This year’s programs are sure to please all ages. All programs will be held in Victory Park and in the event of rain will be held in the Library’s Auditorium.

JUDY PANCOAST
New Hampshire’s own Judy Pancoast, well known to Family Fare audiences, will make her New Hampshire debut with her brand new band, The Groovy Dudes, on July 8th. Judy Pancoast and the Groovy Dudes will rock the park with their signature brand of “Bubblegum Pop for Sweet Kids, ” including new Judy tunes and fan favorites such as “A Little Bit of Elvis” and “Swimming in Jello.” Don’t worry about bringing a chair…you won’t want to sit down!

July 15, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
STORYTELLER /SONGWRITER STEVE BLUNT
Songwriter and storyteller, fun for all ages. There will be stories and songs to sing and just plain silliness.

July 22, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
DAN GRADY AND HIS MARVELOUS MARIONETTES
Show is fast-paced, stringed puppet production comprised of routines that have that special something which is sure to tantalize, captivate, enchant and delight all those whom attend. The broad range of acts include tightrope and trapeze artistry as performed by Eadarg Bros., to the country western strumming and crooning of the celebrated superstar Conway Kitty.

July 29, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS – NATURAL SELECTION
Make a Splash! Summer reading program theme. Water animals will include alligator, snake, tree frogs, toad and turtles and many more. The animals have been rescued and captive born / raised non-native (or “exotic”) wildlife, assist us as Ambassadors of Education… spreading the message of conservation, appreciation and respect for all of Earth’s creatures

August 5, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
VIC & STICKS
A musical storytelling show performed with a vaudeville/ragtime flair! Mixed with old fashioned vaudeville theatrics, this show will surely entertain.

August 12, 2010 – 6pm – Victory Park
DOUBLE VISION
Double Vision (mime, acrobatics, and juggling). The Scalises always knew they wanted more than anything else to be entertainers. Prepare to be amazed as Jody and Linda Scalise showcase their mime, acrobatics, and juggling talents.

Teen Summer Reading Program

Are you between the ages of 12 and 18? Trying to think of some ways to beat the heat this summer? Get out of the sun and into the Manchester City Library, one of the coolest places in town. Relax with some cool books, movies and video games, hang with your friends and win some neat prizes!

Participation is easy, each time you read a book fill out a short form with the book information. These forms double as raffle tickets. Attend one of our Teen programs and earn two raffle tickets just for showing up. To learn more visit the library or contact Kate for more information.

Big Read: a brief rundown

While we’ve already hosted a few book discussions already, The Big Read: Southern New Hampshire Reads The Great Gatsby officially starts this week. Here’s a brief rundown on our upcoming events.

Here’s what we will be doing.

- Wed. 3/25, 1 p.m. Auditorium. Film: 1974 adaptation of the novel The Great Gatsby.

- Thu. 4/2, 7 p.m. Auditorium. A Soundtrack for The Great Gatsby: Music of the Jazz Age with Paul Combs. NH Humanities Council lecture.

- Mon. 4/6, 10 a.m. Winchell Room. Let’s Dance! Get ready to boogie. Make your own instruments. Refreshments. Ages 2-5. Pre-Registration required.

- Thu. 4/9, 7 p.m. Library Auditorium. Concert: West High School Jazz Combo will perform music from the 1920s and beyond.

- Thu. 4/9, 7 p.m. NH Room. Book Discussion: The Great Gatsby. Part of our regular Thursday book discussion program.

Camera Club for Teens

MCL presents a Camera Club for Teens in grades sixth through twelve. Join us November 13th at 3:30 p.m. in the Winchell Room to learn about photography through camera mechanics, compositional principles and existing work. The club will also research colleges and careers in the field of photography as well as the process of achieving those goals. Registration is preferred.
