All museum passes provided by the libraries will be available in the children's room at the Main Branch!

Beginning on July 5th, all museum passes provided by the libraries will be available in the children’s room at the Main Branch at 405 Pine Street. This includes Museum of Science, Museum of Fine Arts and the New England Aquarium which are sponsored by our Friends of West Manchester Community Library. Due to the reduced hours at our branch, which would impact the availability of these important museum passes it was decided to make all museum passes available for pick up at the main library only. The main library has free parking in the lot next to our building and is open:

Monday 8:30 to 8:30
Tuesday 8:30 to 8:30
Wednesday 8:30 to 5:30
Thursday 8:30 to 8:30
Friday 8:30 to 5:30
Saturday 9:30 to 2:30 (year round)

If you have reserved a museum pass, you will now need to come to the children’s room with your library card to pick up your pass. If you would like to see what we offer for museum pass, please check out our list at www.manchester.lib.nh.us. To reserve a pass, you need to be 18 years and older, have a valid, fine-free Manchester City Library card. Choose the day and museum you would like to visit, make the reservation. You would then pick up the museum pass the day before your visit or the day of your visit by 10:00 am; visit the museum; then return the pass to the children’s circulation desk the next day. It is that simple. It is a great way to spend an afternoon with family and friends.

You didn’t even have to swim to Make a Splash at the Manchester City Library this summer. Children and teens alike participated in our annual summer reading program. The theme for children, pre-school to fifth grade was Make a Splash-Read! This summer we saw a huge increase in participation with 414 children with over half of them, 217 met their goal. They read a total of 2604 books in all.
At the main library, we kicked off the celebration with a beach party where we ate ice pops and created masterpieces with color sand. Many children attended our weekly theme related storytimes and programs. Thursday morning crafts and Friday’s Make a Splat outside art program were a huge success. On Wednesday mornings, we were treated to music by our budding musicians, ages 2 to 5 years old during the special Little Movers Storytime. Children’s movies on Monday afternoon were well attended and gave our youngest patrons a chance to get out of the heat and see some of their most favorite films. During July, we painted with bubbles of all shapes and sizes. We also had a visit from the Blue Ocean Society who brought tide pool animals to learn about and even touch.
Over on the West side, Magician Debbie O’Carroll kicked off the summer program with an amazing performance. Weekly events such as make/take crafts, movies and storytimes were a huge success. Family Bingo sponsored by our Friends group and a visit from the Blue Ocean Society drew huge crowds that had a blast escaping the summer heat! Children always looked forward to seeing what they could grab from the treasure chest.
The teen summer reading theme was Make Waves @ Your Library. 60 teens participated, who read a total of 125 books. Special events included Anime Club, Guitar Hero tournament, cooking club, tie-dying t-shirts, as well as a water game party.
The Majestic Theatre helped us wrap up the summer festivities by entertaining us with their performance of a western called The Taming of Katie Lou. So with lots of raffles and refreshments, we ended our summer fun. Many thanks are extended to McDonalds, Ben & Jerry’s, Blake’s Ice Cream and Mel’s Funway for their generous support.

And that June is National Rose Month? It is no wonder, then, that June is also one of the most popular wedding months, as well. Americans have always had an affection for this special flower. More often than any other flower, we hold the rose dear as the symbol of life, love and devotion, symbolic of beauty, affection, and eternity. We find roses throughout art, music, and literature. We decorate our celebrations and parades with roses. Most of all, we present roses to those we love, and we lavish them on our church altars, our civic shrines, and the final resting places of our honored dead. Fossils of roses have been found in Colorado and date back to as far as 35 million years ago! Given all this fondness it should be no surprise that many, many books, magazine articles and blog posts have been written about America’s sweetest flower.

If you have leftovers from your huge turkey dinner check out this recipe adapted from the “Everything Slow Cooker Cookbook”.

Turkey and Dressing Casserole Serves 4

Ingredients: Nonstick spray

2 cups leftover turkey

4 cups leftover stuffing

2 cups leftover gravy

2 Tablespoons heavy cream

leftover vegetables like peas and carrots (1/4 cup or to taste)

Method: Treat your slow cooker with nonstick spray. Cut turkey and dressing into bite-sized pieces. Add to the slow cooker along with the peas and carrots, gravy and heavy cream. Stir to mix. Cover and cook on low for 3 hours, or until heated through.

If you don’t own a slow cooker or crock-pot try something from “The Best Slow & Easy Recipes” published by the geniuses at Cook’s Illustrated. According to their chef’s, cooking food in an oven at moderate temperatures with extended cooking times will produce food that is more flavorful and tender with surprising and delicious flavors. It sounds wonderful and I can’t wait to try something from these books and come in from a cold afternoon of snow shovelling into a house smelling of roasting meat or warm mulled cider from the crock-pot.

If you have any wonderful crock-pot or slow recipes please reply to this post and share them or if there is a cookbook you’d like that we don’t have here at the library please let me know.

And as always, see you at the library!
