It was chosen by the National Endowment of the Arts as “the big read” for 2009 and my book club and I decided to take a trip down memory lane. Since Gatsby was never my favorite book, I vowed to look at it with an open mind. And what a revelation it was. If you want a glimpse at what Fitzgerald christened “The Jazz Age” and all its excesses, Fitzgerald lived it and could describe it accurately. Besides being a fascinating character study, the American Dream and the means Gatsby used to achieve it is central to the story. However, the writing is what made me glad I read the book again. Anyone who can describe someone as “a gorgeous scarcely human orchid of a woman” definitely has my admiration. There will be events locally and throughout New Hampshire surrounding The Big Read this month and next, so you might want to dust off your copy of The Great Gatsby and join the celebration.

MCL Notes, the library’s newsletter on line, has a complete schedule of local “Gatsby” events starting with the kickoff on March 20 at the Currier Museum. The library will follow suit on March 25 with a showing of the 1974 film starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
