Youth Book Award Nominees

Did you know that New Hampshire has youth-chosen book awards for every age group? There’s the Ladybug Picture Book Award for Pre-K through grade 3, the Great Stone Face Book Award for grades 4 to 6, the Isinglass Award for grades 7 and 8, and the Flume Award for grades 9 to 12.

The children’s department owns copies of all the Ladybug and Great Stone Face nominees. Read as many as you can, so you can make an informed choice when you vote for your favorite!

Voting for the Ladybug takes place in November, so now is the time to start reading those books! And while voting for the Great Stone Face won’t take place until April, the list of 25 nominees has some great titles on it, so it’s not too early to start reading them!

Make a Splash! Kids’ Summer Reading Program

Are you looking for something free for your children to do this summer? Join us at the Manchester City Library for our annual summer reading program. This year’s theme is Make a Splash, Read! and will run from June 21st and August 6th.

To participate in the program, children are encouraged to read, or have read to them, 10 books. Librarians and volunteers will be available daily to share stories, chart books, and award prizes. Some of this year’s prizes are sponsored by Blake’s, Mel’s Funway, McDonald’s, and Ben and Jerry’s. Registration for the program will begin on June 21st.

We will be offering many weekly programs for different ages during the weeks of the summer reading program:

Mondays: Family matinée at 1:00 PM (movies are listed below)
Tuesdays: Family storytime for all ages at 9:30 AM
Wednesdays: Little Movers storytime for ages 2 to 5 at 10:30 AM
Thursdays: Summer crafts for grades K-5 at 9:30 AM
Fridays: Lap-sit storytime for 23 months and under at 9:30 AM

Many other fun activities, raffles and programs are planned. The program will be kicked off with an indoor family beach party on Monday, June 21st from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, and will end with a summer reading party on Thursday, August 13th at 2:00 PM, where the Majestic Theatre Trust will be performing Go West, a fun, adventure filled production.
