If you lived in Manchester during the early 1960s you probably remember the free newspaper called the Manchester Free Press. Then came Wednesday, The Wednesday Journal, The Journal, Manchester Journal and Southern New Hampshire Journal.
Most recently published were the Manchester Daily Express and the Manchester Express. All were published in Manchester, contained feature articles about the city and were FREE. Due in part to a grant from the Cogswell Benevolent Trust, the library has been able to microfilm the surviving issues of these titles. Once they are processed these microfilmed newspapers should be available for public use in the New Hampshire Room sometime after Columbus Day. Watch for the announcement on our website at www.manchesterlibrary.org, on our online catalog, or call the N. H. Room at 624-6550×306 for more information.

The Manchester City Library maintains prior copies of two newspapers, Union Leader and New Hampshire Sunday News. The copies are on microfilm. Neither edition is indexed prior to 1989.

You are free to seach the microfilm. You should first try to determine the day, month and year. If you wish the library to do the searching for you there are a few points. We will search for articles and obituaries for a non-refundable fee of $5.00 if month, day (with-in 5 days) and years are provided per search. If only the month and year are provided the non-refundable search is $20.00 per search.

Additional fees include copy charge and postage. Please note there is no assurance that articles or obituaries will be found. Older obituaries are often difficult to locate. It is very diffcult to copy newpaper pictures.
