For the month of January the Brown Bag Book Club will be reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantell. Thomas Cromwell rose from humble beginnings to become Henry VIII’s advisor and enabler. Thomas Cromwell is described as an original man, a charmer and a bully, both an idealist and an opportunist, astute in reading people, and implacable in his ambition. Set in Tudor England, Henry VIII is on the throne, but has no heir. Cardinal Wolsey is charged with securing his divorce. Into this atmosphere of distrust comes Thomas Cromwell – a man as ruthlessly ambitious in his wider politics as he is for himself. His reforming agenda is carried out in the grip of a self-interested parliament and a king who fluctuates between romantic passions and murderous rages. Plan to join us at lunchtime on Tuesday, January 28th, from 12:15 to 1:30 PM to discuss this award winning book. You are encouraged to bring your lunch.
