This June, we celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the largest seaborne invasion in history and a major turning point in World War II. Many years in the planning, the British Empire, United States, France, Norway, and other Allied countries collaborated in secrecy to formulate the plan to invade German occupied Europe from the west, code named ‘Operation Overlord’. On June 6, 1944, the Allies landed at the beaches of Normandy to establish a western front to the fighting in Europe in an attempt to divert and divide the Axis powers from the eastern front in Russia. While D-Day was just the start of Operation Overlord, it was the turning point that led to the allied victory in Europe nearly a year later in 1945. 75 years later, we still remember the event that changed the outcome of WWII in favor of the Allies.
