There is a lot of confusing information out there. The Manchester City Library will be posting a series of blog posts To help you develop some news and media literacy skills.
What is Media Literacy?
Media literacy is the ability to critically analyze news and media content.
Media literacy can help you:
- better understand how media is presented
- better recognize bias, spin and misinformation
- look at news and other sources with a more critical eye
When looking at media, ask yourself:
- WHO wrote the story? WHO are the sources?
- WHEN was it published/when did it happen?
- WHERE is it published?
- HOW is it being presented?
- WHY is it being told? (is it news or is it meant to sway opinion?)
Is it news or an ad?
Advertisers are tricky. Keep an eye out for these clues:
Is it trying to sell you something?
Does it say ‘sponsored content’ next to the link?
Do you see the AdChoices symbol?

If you said ‘YES’ to any of these, it’s an advertisement!
Test your media literacy knowledge with some quizzes courtesy of the News Literacy Project.
Concerned about COVID? The National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE) has compiled a list of resources to help fight the spread of misinformation:
