June 28th, 1969, sparked what we now celebrate as Pride Month. The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar on Christopher Street in New York City, was raided by police on that date, and triggered riots by members of the LGBT community. The following year, one of the first pride parades was held to commemorate Christopher Street Liberation Day, as June 28th became known. As the Gay Liberation Movement grew exponentially over the following years, so did the pride celebration. Parades are now held across the country, and even internationally, on or around the 28th, and the rest of June is filled with other celebrations, parties, concerts, workshops, and other educational opportunities. Pride month celebrates and recognizes all members of the LGBTQ community, raises awareness, and promotes inclusion. Learn more by checking out one of the following books on display in the library.
