D-Day

June 6th, 2021 · No Comments · City Library, Main Branch

June 6, 1944. At 6:30am on that fateful day, Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy at the start of Operation Overlord. D-Day was monumental in invading German-occupied France and Western Europe. Approximately 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches and more than 4,000 troops lost their lives that day. This invasion is still considered one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history. D-Day and Operation Overlord were a success, leading to the liberation of France and a major turning point for the Allied Forces. Many documentaries and films have been made about the Normandy landings, films like D-Day: Last Words and Band of Brothers. For books about D-Day, come see our display case at the top of the stairs.
