While it’s important to read books from diverse authors and about diverse stories year-round, February is a great time to highlight Black authors and stories in celebration of Black History Month.
The theme of Black History Month for 2023 celebrates “Black Resistance,” and what better way to do that than to focus on Black women? Black women are killed in the US at three times the rate of white women. Black women are more likely to die giving birth. Black girls are suspended more frequently than their white peers, even as preschoolers.
These stories celebrate the everyday magic of Black women’s continued survival and struggle to define themselves in a country that systematically opposes them. The settings are fantastic, and the main characters are Black girls and women that grow their power, femininity, and identity.
