September kicks off the official season for the National Football League (NFL). Americans wanted a sport to distinguish them from other countries, and what is known as American football is a mix of two sports: rugby and soccer. There are 32 teams in the NFL, divided into two conferences: the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC), with each split into East, North, South, and West divisions. Four teams comprise a division, and each team is based in a different city or area. Here are some different teams based on their conference and location:
National Football Conference
East: Dallas Cowboys
North: Chicago Bears
South: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
West: Los Angeles Rams
American Football Conference
East: New England Patriots
North: Baltimore Ravens
South: Houston Texans
West: Denver Broncos
The Super Bowl is the annual championship game between the two conferences (NFC & AFC). The Super Bowl has drawn an audience of 113 million people (from February 2023). The Super Bowl is as famous for its commercials as it is for the sport itself. Some famous promotional and commercials over the years include the Super Bowl Shuffle, by the Chicago Bears (Super Bowl XX) and the NFL 100 Super Bowl Commercial (in 2020). Stop by the library this month and have a look at our football display on the first floor by the elevator.
