September 2023 BookPage – Fall’s Finest Fiction

September 12th, 2023 · No Comments · Books, City Library, Main Branch, West Branch

It may not feel like it right now but summer is ending and soon autumn will be upon us. That makes it the perfect time of year to curl up with a cup of cider and a new novel recommended by the folks at BookPage. Readers looking for mysteries and thrillers will find plenty of options to pique their interest, including The River We Remember, a mystery set in 1950s Minnesota that is reminiscent of both the Andy Griffiths Show and To Kill A Mockingbird. Mick Herron’s prequel for his Slough House series The Secret Hours takes readers back to Cold War era Berlin. Happiness Falls is a gripping family drama thriller about a non-verbal autistic teenager, his missing father, and their family’s quest to bring everyone back together.

If you’re a fan of classic martial arts films check out S.L. Huang’s The Water Outlaws, a subtle and complex Chinese fantasy novel “about a band of noble bandits facing off against an oppressive government.” Best-selling author Etaf Rum is back with a new autobiographical novel, Evil Eye, that explores her family’s generational trauma and the similarities between Arab and American Southern cultures.

Or you can learn more about some underappreciated women from history in this month’s biographies. Including, Passionate Mothers, Powerful Sons : The Lives of Jennie Jerome Churchill and Sara Delano Roosevelt by Charlotte Gray, and Yunte Huang’s Daughter of the Dragon: Anna May Wong’s Rendezvous with American History.
