I am relieved that the West Side Library will remain open, however, I am disappointed the days of operation have been reduced. As a youth, I grew up in memorable and happy days in the late 40’s and 50’s on the west side without the amenities of a West Side Library, Boys’ Club, and YMCA as compared to my east side friends and always considered us as “After Thoughts” on the West Side when it came to politics, education, and personal security. As Principal of Parkside Middle School later in life for 15 years I had to fight for an addition to our school as opposed to carting portables onto the grounds. And after 11 years of retirement, I have come to the realization: that nothing has changed in terms of viewing the West Side. Does anybody care?

Nice comment, Dad. I agree with this 100%!

Yes Ed, I care. I have also lived on the west side and know exactly what you’re talking about.

I have recently been in the Pine St. Library and noticed they are, for the first time, going to be open during the summer on Saturdays, which they have never been. So let me get this straight. They will be closed for two days at the branch now and open up for an extra day on Pine St. This is the thanks that the people on the west side get for urging the Mayor and alderman to give more funds to the library to keep the branch open. I find this very disconcerting.

Wonder if the higher ups at the Library are paying attention to people’s priorities and what they want. I don’t think it is less hours at the branch and MORE at Pine St. If anything you’d think they would equal it out.

It’s obvious the same mentality of the west side is maintained with the trustees of the library as with the city government.

However, I, like you, am just relieved that the branch didn’t close.

Saturday hours during the summer have been requested by library users for many years. In order to meet that demand we reduced and rearranged operating hours at the main library. We appreciate the support from all of our library users in helping us to maintain limited hours at our branch during these difficult times.
