Are you looking for a good and scary read?  Set in crumbling castles, haunted mansions and other gloomy locations, gothic novels have darker plots filled with mystery, romance and death.  While some modern novels have glamorized the lives of witches, vampires and werewolves, these characters can also be found lurking amongst the pages of gothic novels.  With Halloween right around the corner, why not try a book with a little more edge.  Some examples of gothic novels are listed below.

Dracula by Bram Stoker
Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón
The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The House of the Seven Gables by Nathaniel Hawthorne
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
The Shining by Stephen King
The Distant Hours by Kate Morton
The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
The Keep by Jennifer Egan
