A Smorgasbord of Diet Books

Picture this: a slice of whole wheat toast sits innocently on a plate, waiting for you to slather it with butter and strawberry jam. Sounds like a perfectly respectable breakfast, doesn’t it? Well, not according to William Davis, a cardiologist and the author of Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight and Find Your Path to Health. In fact, as the title implies, in all its delicious transformations, wheat can be quite imperfect. Because it has been hybridized and modified in the last few decades our bodies metabolize this highly processed wheat as blood sugar. And, you know where this is going– it’s going to your waistline. Excess blood glucose becomes fat and not just any fat—it becomes belly fat, aka visceral fat—the kind that not only makes you look pudgy and feel sluggish but also increases your risk of diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, among other things.

Despite all the health benefits of the author’s wheat-free eating plan, some may find other diets less restrictive and more to their liking. How about Jorge Cruise’s 3-Hour Diet: Lose up to 10 Pounds in Just 2 Weeks by Eating Every 3 Hours. Doesn’t that sound doable? For the more traditional among you give Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution a try. And since the holidays are right around the corner and cookies will be coming out of the woodwork you may want to bake up some of the low calorie treats in South Beach Diet Parties and Holiday Cookbook: Healthy Recipes for Entertaining Family and Friends. And to all you dieters out there good luck and bon appétit!
