On July 4, 2026, our nation will commemorate and celebrate the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Our journey toward this historic day is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward a great future that we want to build for the next generation and beyond.

The Pine Tree Riot

The Pine Tree Flag depicts a single Eastern white pine tree and was a flag often used in the American Revolution.

New Hampshire’s role in the American Revolution was both decisive and daring. The Pine Tree Riot in Weare set an early precedent of dissent and this act of defiance gave inspiration for the now infamous Boston Tea Party. As the first colony to establish its own constitution independent of Great Britain, it set a precedent for the emerging nation. Portsmouth’s bustling seaport, the beautiful and rugged White Mountains, and the industrious river mill towns became backdrops for colonists determined to chart their own destinies. Long before the ink dried on the Declaration of Independence’s parchment, the Granite State had already taken steps toward self-governance, adopting its own constitution in January 1776. This 250th anniversary is more than a commemoration of the past. It’s a celebration of resilience, innovation, and the strength of spirit, as seen on exhibit at Strawbery Banke, which continues to define and shape New Hampshire’s history today.
